Ingredients That Support Your Immune System

There are multiple things to consider when tackling the need for a ready-to-drink, all-in-one complete protein shake. Our team wanted to create something that was delicious and affordable, while offering complete plant-based nutrition to everyone; that’s why we created Soylent.

As we reflect on what complete nutrition entails, we thought very holistically about the human body and all that we need to be at our best. Beyond all the many complete nutritional benefits of Soylent, we also wanted to focus on supporting immune system needs as well.

Your immune system is complex and one of the hardest working in your body. Made up of organs that always play more than one role in your health, your immune system could use some TLC.

Supporting your immune system is one of the easiest ways to ensure your body’s in good shape all around. When formulating Soylent, we knew that complete nutrition entailed mimicking the foods that boost immunity. So, we made sure that the Soylent formula was inspired by all the foods that boost your immune system day-to-day; our ingredients list reflects that.

Keep reading to learn more about the ingredients in our Soylent products. Each one is carefully selected to bring you closer to a healthy immune system and a supported body.

What is the Immune System?

The immune system is complicated but oh so important. It’s the system that protects your body from infectious germs. The immune system is comprised of your lymph nodes, bone marrow, thymus, spleen, adenoids, tonsils, and skin.

When given proper support, your organs within the immune system help fight off infections by identifying and destroying harmful microorganisms. Once identified, your immune system helps you build immunity to infections. When you reencounter certain germs, you can fight them faster the next time around, often before you even begin to feel symptoms.

You must take proper care of your immune system and the organs within it to remain healthy and protected from both minor and life-threatening infections. Luckily for you, supporting your immune system doesn’t mean taking 1,000 different supplements and medication each day. Typically you can keep your immune system in good shape just by resting, exercising, and maintaining a healthy diet of nutritious foods. This is where Soylent comes in.

Soylent offers complete nutrition, meaning Soylent products have to offer the same support to your immune system as any other whole meal would. Here’s how we do it:

Immune Boosting Ingredients Found in Soylent

Soylent is a ready-to-drink meal offering 20g of plant-based protein, 39 essential nutrients, and only 1g of sugar. Every ingredient is thoughtfully selected to ensure that Soylent is an overall good source of everything your body needs to function at its best.

Vitamin D

Multiple cross-sectional studies have associated lower vitamin D levels with increased infection. One report concluded that individuals with lower vitamin D levels were more likely to self-report a recent upper respiratory tract infection than those with sufficient levels.

Vitamin D has been used to treat infections such as tuberculosis before the advent of effective antibiotics. Cod liver oil, a rich source of vitamin D, has been used extensively to treat tuberculosis as well as offer general increased protection from infections. Rather than consuming cod liver oil or other fatty fish, you can use the vitamin D in Soylent to support your immune system.

Iron

Experimental evidence in the last decades shows that iron is a fundamental element for normal development of the immune system. Being iron deficient affects your ability to have an adequate immune response. The role of iron is to help cells' proliferation and maturation; these actions are necessary for your body to respond correctly to infections.

You’d typically get your iron from red meats and dark leafy greens, but you can ensure you’re taking in 20% of the recommended daily iron serving by drinking one bottle of Soylent.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is known for playing a critical role in enhancing immune function. Vitamin A is involved in the development of the immune system and helps regulate cellular immune responses and humoral immune processes. You can find vitamin A in foods like sweet potato, tomatoes, and beef liver, or you can turn to Soylent. Without vitamin A, your immune system will struggle to fight off infections.

The Eight B Vitamins

Within Soylent, you’ll find all eight B vitamins; each one playing a role in supporting your immune system:

  • Vitamin B1(thiamine)
  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin)
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin)
  • Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)
  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
  • Vitamin B7 (biotin)
  • Vitamin B9 (folic acid)
  • Vitamin B12 (cobalamin)

Each B vitamin has a critical part to play in energizing the body and regulating biological responses, but Vitamin B6 is particularly vital to a healthy immune system. Pyridoxine is in charge of keeping the immune system strong; it makes new red blood cells and transports oxygen throughout the body. Vitamin B6 deficiencies can cause mood changes and reduce the antibodies that are needed to avoid infections. Vitamin B6 is also responsible for producing white blood cells and T cells, which regulate your immune responses.

Zinc

Zinc has become a popular treatment for the common cold. Zinc is a mineral that's important to the body in many ways; it keeps the immune system strong, helps heal wounds, and supports normal growth. It’s noted that red meat, poultry, and oysters are good sources of zinc, but if you’re looking for a vegan way to get your daily zinc, turn to beans, nuts, or Soylent.

Magnesium

Magnesium is another ingredient found in Soylent that can help boost your immune system tremendously. It’s been found that the level of magnesium in your blood is an important factor in determining your immune system's ability to tackle pathogens and cancer cells. Magnesium deficiency is associated with various diseases, infections, and even cancer.  Please help you help your immune system by simply intaking a sufficient amount of magnesium.
