What Is Allulose?

Over the past couple of decades we’ve done a lot of research into the sweets we consume, and with good reason. What we eat has a heavy impact on how we feel and how we live, and therefore many of us become intrigued with all the possibilities.

We have receptors for five kinds of taste: sour, salty, bitter, savory, and most importantly, sweet. We all appreciate a bit of sweetness from time to time. Whether our sweet tooth is satisfied by a bowl of fruit or cereal, it definitely plays a role in our diets.

When it comes to creating sweet flavors, we’ve seen revolutionary tactics and ingredients coming from all around the world. Some innovation comes from simply trying to elevate a food’s flavor profile, whereas others come from a search for improved health benefits.

In trying new things in the sweetness sphere, there’s been a rise in allulose use. If you’re curious as to why allulose is taking the world by storm we’ve got the details.

What Is Allulose?

Allulose is a new competitor in the game of sweetness. From stevia to honey to maple syrup, we’ve all heard about different ways to add sweetness to our meals without using traditional sugar.

Allulose sweetener is about 70% as sweet as sugar and a great sugar substitute because of its properties. Allulose contains about 10% of the calories of a proportionate amount of table sugar, making it a popular choice for those pursuing weight loss.

Allulose sugar is available in a granulated form and has zero net carbs, no chemical aftertaste, and won’t upset your stomach the way other sugar alcohols might.

Where does this appealing sugar come from, and why is it thriving as an alternative to regular sugar?

Where Does Allulose Come From?

Unlike most other sweeteners, allulose is a real sugar. Allulose is a monosaccharide, or simple sugar, that is found in tiny quantities in foods you find in nature like wheat, figs, and raisins.

Because allulose is found in nature in very small amounts, it’s been granted entry to an elusive group of sugars called “rare sugars.” Allulose’s rarity is defined by its slight differences in chemical composition compared to other sugars.

What are the benefits of allulose?

What Are The Benefits of Using Allulose?

Allulose is recognized as safe to consume, and beyond being safe, it’s known as beneficial. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has raised no objections to four separate Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) notifications filed for allulose.

Because allulose is made from natural fruits, its benefits don’t only out perform artificial sweeteners but also sucrose.

  • Allulose is a lower calorie option: There are approximately 0.4 calories per gram of allulose, compared with four calories per gram of sucrose.
  • Allulose does not increase blood glucose: Allulose’s chemical composition prevents it from being metabolized. People with diabetes can benefit from allulose’s properties because it doesn’t increase blood sugar or insulin levels.
  • Allulose cooks like sugar: Many find incorporating sweeteners like stevia and Splenda into their diets difficult. When cooked, artificial sweeteners produce a stickiness or chemical taste that doesn’t hit the sweet spot. Allulose can be cooked and used just like regular sugar and gains credit for tasting like it’s supposed to.

Allulose’s benefits far outweigh its reported side effects. This rare sugar is indeed new to the game and still being studied, so there is more for all of us to learn.

Try out allulose for yourself and consult your doctor whenever you add something new to your diet.

Why Do We Use Allulose In Soylent?

In recent years, our ability to manufacture allulose more efficiently has increased. Now, enough is generated to consistently add allulose to consumer goods, like your beloved Soylent.

Our team took notice of this increased production and elected to use allulose in Soylent products. In Soylent shakes, allulose serves up a subtle sweetness that heightens our yummy flavors while serving up more health benefits than ever before.

From Vanilla and Banana to Strawberry and Mint Chocolate, a bit of sweetness is always a delightful addition to any complete meal. You don’t have to sacrifice sweet flavors for healthy solutions or healthy meals for bland flavors.

Soylent’s on a mission to create complete, healthy, and satisfying meals for all, and allulose is helping us get there. As we come across more rarities in nature and ways to satisfy our bodies’ needs, we will continue to innovate Soylent products so that they’re more accessible, sustainable, and healthy for all.
